Background of the study
Artisanal mining is a significant economic activity in many Nigerian communities; however, its environmental repercussions are increasingly drawing attention. In Ilesa West, unregulated artisanal mining has been linked to soil degradation and reduced fertility, impacting agricultural productivity and local livelihoods (Ogunyemi, 2023). The practice, often carried out without adequate environmental safeguards, leads to soil erosion, contamination by heavy metals, and disruption of soil structure. These changes compromise the land’s ability to sustain crop production and natural vegetation (Adekunle, 2024). Recent studies have highlighted that while artisanal mining provides immediate economic benefits, its long-term environmental costs are substantial, particularly in terms of soil health (Adewale, 2025). This investigation explores the direct effects of artisanal mining on soil fertility in Ilesa West, aiming to understand the magnitude of environmental damage and the subsequent socio-economic implications. It further considers remedial measures and sustainable practices that could mitigate the adverse impacts on soil quality, thereby ensuring the viability of agriculture in the region (Femi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Artisanal mining in Ilesa West has led to significant deterioration of soil fertility, affecting agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of local farmers. The lack of regulation and environmental oversight in mining activities exacerbates soil degradation. Without effective remediation measures, the long-term sustainability of agriculture in the area is at risk, prompting the need for urgent intervention and sustainable mining practices (Balogun, 2024).
